Chapter 6: Monastic Mindfulness

Monastic Mindfulness: A Blend of Harmony, Wholeness, Balance

1. Sister Joan writes, “Awareness of the sacred in life is what holds our world together and the lack of awareness and sacred care is what is tearing it apart.” (page 69). In what specific ways might “awareness of the sacred in life” help hold our world together?

2. In this chapter, Sister Joan stresses that Benedictine mindfulness requires respect for personal goods, planetary stewardship and the use of time. Comment on one or all three of these aspects that constitute a Benedictine understanding of harmony, wholeness and balance. Which of the three interests you the most at this time in your life?

3. “What are the signs of harmony and balance and awareness in our lives?” Sister Joan asks on page 76. She then describes (pages 76-78) how people with a sense of Benedictine balance and awareness operate in the world. Was there anything in her description that you’d like to comment on? How do you understand this sentence: “To the monastic mind, everything speaks of God.”
